When to recharge a car battery？

The only way to test this is with a voltmeter – a battery that is showing about 12.0-12.5v with the engine off, should be showing 13.8-14.8v while the engine. If it is still only reading around 12.0-13.0V when the engine is running, the alternator isn’t charging.
