What cord blood and cord tissue processing methods do you use and what yield or % of cells is saved?   by Americord

Manual cell separation or modified “Rubinstein method.” The lab processes the blood to separate the mononuclear cells. The lab prefers the standard Hespan method, because this allows the entire process to be performed in a “closed” system (a sterile blood bag transfer set), greatly reducing the chances of external contamination while processing.

As of Aug 31 2011, our average cord blood sample size for our entire inventory was 92.5 ml and average stem cell yield is 91.1%. This is above the industry standard of 70ml and 90% stem cell yield. This is higher than our competitors published numbers if you were to look at the entire inventory, not just a select portion. If the competitor cites a higher number than that, most likely they are not citing the entire inventory. One reason for our higher yields this is because since inception, we have only used the FDA approved cord blood bags made by Pall Corporation. We also use the fastest medical courier, Airnet, which has their own planes and an average time to the lab of about 12 hours nationwide, which makes a difference with the collection yields, our lab is accredited by the AABB, we are registered with the FDA, licensed and registered throughout the U.S., and follow the best practices for the industry. Admittedly, we get a little worked up about claims that at least one other company makes about getting 99% yield since the data is not based on the entire inventory, or even a randomly selected statistically significant number.
