There are literally hundreds of mobile phones to purchase and no matter which one you choose you now have a nearly unlimited number of accessories with which to protect your vital information. Mobile phone cases and protective accessories are purchases that should accompany your new phone.

They can be categorized in a few ways; there are hard cases and soft cases as well as bag and fashion style covers. Some protective devices simply cover the phone screen and can be used alone or with an additional cover. All these cases attempt to protect the phone from falls, drops, weather, and dirt.

The first phone cases used soft leather to cover the phone. These simple cases usually had a cutout for the keypad and holes for the earpiece and mouthpiece. They were helpful but not very good at protecting for significant drops or falls. They also wore out quickly and did little to protect the phone from the weather. As phone technology advanced, so too did phone cases. Different materials such as plastic and rubber were used and later new materials such as silicone became common. Plastic hard cases became to take favor due to the ability to withstand more damage. Dropping a phone no longer meant buying a new one. Sometimes the Hard Cover would be damaged or cracked during a drop but having to replace a plastic hard case was far better than replacing a phone.

The growing popularity of costly smart phones meant that even better protection was needed. The introduction of silicon cases began. Silicone was a natural selection for its durability, waterproof quality, and ease of manufacture. This new material allowed for cases that fit very well for many, many specific phone models. They could withstand multiple drops and added a certain level of weather protection. The ease of manufacture meant that new phone features such as camera lenses and accessory ports could be accessible while still protecting the phone.

Touch Screen technology also created the need to protect a phone screen while keeping it scratch free at the same time. Thin film screen protectors were introduced to accomplish this. These are made of a thin plastic film that attaches to the phone screen glass with static electricity. They are thin enough to not interfere with the touch screen functions but sufficient to keep the glass from getting scratched. Additionally, some screen protectors have an anti-glare function that helps to view the phone screen under bright light conditions.

Phone cases are not just for function like the cell phone battery, they also can show off your style. They come in every color and pattern, some are furry or fuzzy and some are even adorned with decorative jewelry effects.
