what happens to the cell voltage when NaCl is added to silver half-cell of Ag|Zn electrochemical cell?

The following half reactions are involved in an electrochemical cell:
(Ag+) + (e-) = Ag E=0.80V
(Zn 2+) + (2e-) = Zn E=-0.76V

The cell reaction is

2Ag+ + Zn ⇌ Zn2+ + 2Ag ….. E˚_cell =0.80 + 0.76 = 1.56 V

E˚cell tells you the potential when all the concentrations are standard. In other words, it is the cell potential when [Ag+] = [Zn2+] = 1.0 M

When you add Cl– to silver half-cell, the concentration of free Ag+ drops. You have lowered driving force for the reaction; the lower concentration of Ag+ makes the half-cell LESS oxidizing. ∆G becomes less negative and E_cell becomes less positive than E˚_cell.

So, the answer is (a) the cell voltage will decrease
