The Top Five Free Cell Phones by Daniel Swensen
Once upon a time, purchasing a cell phone could be an expensive proposition. Cell phones themselves were bulky and expensive, sometimes even requiring a credit check and a hefty deposit. Fortunately, times have changed, and online retailers are, quite literally, giving phones away. There are some strings attached, of course, in the form of an obligatory contract, but you might be surprised at what you can get for nothing.
The Motorola Razr V3 Pink
The iconic Razr from Motorola is one of the most recognizable and oft-imitated cell phone designs in the world — and it comes in pink! With an anodized aluminum shell and an ultra-thin design, the Razr V3 comes with long-range Bluetooth, a 4x zoom VGA digital camera, voice dialing, picture messaging, Web browsing, and data capability. The Razr V3 is a fully-loaded phone, easily competitive with any of the newer models on the market, and can be picked up for the fairly unbeatable price of — well, nothing — with a new AT&T account.
The Samsung T629 and the Motorola RIZR Z3 for T-Mobile
Loaded with a 1.3 Megapixel Camera, a built-in MP3 player, voice dialing, and Bluetooth, the Samsung T629 is a competitive phone in its own right. It also comes with T-Mobile’s MyFaves, video capture, and PC synchronization, as well as WAP 2.0 Web browsing, text / SMS messaging, and expandable memory for holding more songs or video.
If that doesn’t strike your fancy, Motorola also makes the RIZR Z3 for T-Mobile, and it’s just as free. The RIZR Z3 is Motorola’s first slider-style phone, with a handset that slides up smoothly instead of flipping open. The RIZR comes with a 2.0 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, video capture, a built-in music player, and a full suite of instant messaging software for AOL, MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo! messaging. The RIZR Z3 is so stylish, your friends are unlikely to believe you when you tell them what you paid for it.
Both the Samsung T629 and the Motorola RIZR Z3 are available for free with a new account.
The Motorola RAZR V3m Silver for Verizon Wireless
Another cell phone in Motorola’s distinctive Razr line, the RAZR V3m is super-slim and loaded with features that belie its nonexistent price tag. The RAZR V3m comes with built-in VCAST music player, Bluetooth wireless technology, and watch-on-demand TV from VCAST (with the necessary add-on plan, of course). It also sports a 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, streaming multimedia, and GPS support. The Motorola RAZR V3m is free from Verizon Wireless with a new account.
The Samsung M300 Black for Sprint PCS
For Sprint customers, there’s the Samsung M300. One of the lightest phones on the market, the M300 is a great everyday phone, outfitted with Bluetooth wireless, a VGA digital camera, voice-activated dialing, text / SMS messaging, and GPS and streaming multimedia available from Sprint Radio. Like the other cell phones in this lineup, the Sprint M300 is available for free with a new account from Sprint.
Each of these cell phones require a new contract to go with the phone itself, of course. But if you’re in the market for a new cell phone, or are just looking to switch cell phone carriers, the price is definitely hard to beat.
